“We Choose The Bay" campaign: Remove Single-use Plastic
It might not be widely known that 8 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean every year. Plastics are broken down into pieces and fall into the ocean by sun rays, saltwater, and waves but never decompose, and become the major threat to fish and other marine life. It is thus a challenge to dispose of it.
Vietnam is a country with a long coastline, a large number of islands and gulfs, so pollution of the marine environment is becoming a matter of social concern. Halong Bay is one of the famous places with breathtaking beauty, which recognized by the whole world as well as a destination not to be missed if coming to Vietnam. However, there is a sad reality that the bay is suffering 7 tons of waste every day and most of it is plastic for various reasons such as economic development, a large number of tourists, etc.
Therefore, Sealife Group has launched a campaign called "We Choose The Bay" to reduce the environmental pollution load on the bay. In this campaign, Sealife Group took practical actions to decrease plastic waste on the bay. One of the outstanding activities in the campaign was removing single-use plastic.
What is single-use plastic?
Due to the United Nations Environment Programme — UNEP, “Plastic is a lightweight, hygienic and resistant material which can be molded in a variety of ways and utilized in a wide range of applications”. So single-use plastic is “disposable plastics, are commonly used for plastic packaging and include items intended to be used only once before they are thrown away or recycled. These include, among other items, grocery bags, food packaging, bottles, straws, containers, cups, and cutlery”.
In other words, disposable plastic is meant to be items that have been used once before being thrown away or recycled.
How does Sealife remove Single-use Plastic?
The first and essential step towards beating plastic pollution is to avoid the usage of plastic products. Instead of using the plastic bottle of water in the room, we replace the glass bottle. Likewise, we limit the supply of plastic water bottles when taking guests to the attractions. We gradually switch to using a glass bottle or even stop providing water to customers until returning to the cruise.
Moreover, instead of using plastic bags, we have produced eco-friendly bags made from canvas that can be reused many times. We replaced the plastic amenities with luxurious and reusable ceramic bottles to reduce plastic.
If everyone aware and follow strictly to beat ocean plastic pollution then we can certainly bring down the pollution level to a large extent. It is time for us to stand united to fight plastic pollution!
